Elderly Cypriots busted for poker

Police in the Republic of Cyprus detained 42 persons in connection with illegal gambling Tuesday. Authorities said those arrested, all women aged between 50 and 95, were betting on poker and gin rummy when police raided their Limassol den.
According to Reuters, authorities recovered some $148 in illegal wagers and confiscated 536 poker chips and 830 playing cards. The news agency also said Cypriot police organized the armed raid after several Limassol residents complained that the women were causing a disturbance.
“(The women) were charged with gambling and released,” a police spokesman said.
Limassol, located on Cyprus’s southern coast, is within the island nation’s Greek sector. Casino gaming is legal within its northern Turkish sector. But Greek sector law forbids all gambling activity outside betting on the national lottery and using state-sponsored horse- and sports-betting shops.
Online casinos, meanwhile, remain unregulated in Cyprus. According to British newspaper The Daily Mail, Cypriots spend nearly $150 million on Internet gambling annually.
Tuesday’s arrest is the most recent instance of a growing trend among Cyprus’s elderly. The Daily Mail reported that retirees arrested for gambling in a previous police raid said they were only playing for “social recreation.”
The Daily Mail went on to quote Cypriot daily newspaper Politis, which has criticized police for the raids.
“The police raid was upsetting for these elderly women,” Politis said. “They were only playing for small change, which they hadn’t given to their grandchildren to use on fruit machines.”
Authorities have not released information concerning the women’s upcoming court hearings. However, several commentators speculate that, even if convicted, the women will only face minimal fines because of their age and how small their bets were.
