Twaits calls for online safeguards

Tuesday, Betfair Australia Chief Executive Andrew Twaits told Australia’s Productivity Commission that legalizing online gambling could lead to an increase in gambling addiction.
“'I can't sit here and tell you there won't be more problem gamblers created through online gaming or online wagering,” Twaits said during a commission hearing in Melbourne. “I think what we as an industry need to do is to provide the safest platform that we possibly can.”
Twaits’s statement comes as Australian lawmakers consider lifting the country’s ban on online gambling. In a draft report issued in October the Productivity Commission suggested the federal government “initiate a process for the managed liberalization of online gaming.''
The report estimated that Australians spend some $722 million at overseas online gambling sites annually.
It went on to conclude, “Whilst it is probable that this ban reduced the growth of online gaming, it is clear that international sites are being increasingly accessed and the Australian ban has limited utility.”
According to current Australian law, residents may legally access online gambling products, and licensed operators may provide horse and sports betting services. However, it is illegal for operators to offer online poker and online casino games, such as roulette, blackjack and online slots, on the Australian market.
Betfair Australia is currently licensed to provide online sports and horse betting services in Australia. It also holds information-sharing agreements with many of the country’s racing bodies and professional sports organizations.
“Having the right sort of safeguards in terms of loss limits and deposit limits is the best way of preventing problem gambling,” Twaits said. “Clearly the vast majority of consumers want to engage or they are engaging in poker in pubs and clubs.… (Online gaming) is just another channel of distribution.”
