 Durrrr

16-May-2010

He may look like a Star Trek extra, but Tom "Durrr" Dwan catches like Johnny Bench. In fact, Durrr gives the old Cincinnati Red first-ballot Hall of Famer a run for his money in the catching department – card catching, that is. He plays big hands and gets in big trouble, but Durrrr The Phenom always escapes unscathed.

He did it again just the other day on High Stakes Poker the Cash Game, firing into the steely Patrik Antonius – one, two, three bullets – over and over again. Antonius lobbed back a grenade (a $100,000 raise) on the river, but guess what? Durrrr caught about the only card he could even consider calling the raise with: a jack off-suit.

Here’s the hand: Durrrr raises with A-J off; Antonius calls behind him with 4-6 of diamonds.

The flop is 2-2-3 with the deuce and trey of diamonds, a straight flush draw for Antonius. Durrrr bets $6,000 with the standard continuation. Antonius judiciously just calls against such a dangerous opponent.

The turn is the seven of clubs. We’re getting ready to separate the wheat from the chaff, and to nobody’s surprise, there's plenty of wheat in this hand. Durrrr mulls it over at this, the tipping point of the hand, and decides to keep representing. He bets $20,000. Antonius calls again.

This is what two high-powered players arriving at the moment of truth in a poker hand looks like. The fact was that Antonius had the hand set up to where there was at least an 80 percent chance he would either hit his draw or parlay his two smooth calls on the flop and turn into a slowplay lookalike. The latter would mean he could steal the pot with a river bet or raise. With both players at a world-class level, that’s just where the hand was.

Except for one thing: A jack off-suit came on the river. Now Durrrr’s representing becomes authentic. Antonius has missed his draw and the tables are now turned. Durrrr has a hand and Antonius is in a real must-steal situation. Wow! A pretty sweet spot for Mr. Durrrr.

“40K,” bets Durrrr. Antonius tanks, then goes over the top for another $100,000. All this almost had to happen given the flop and turn developments. But now Durrrr, with the help of the river jack, picks it off.

I’m not saying Durrrr couldn’t have called it with ace-high, but it was very, very unlikely. The jack put wind in his sails. It also allowed us to watch the phenom stack his chips toward the rafters once again.

The real phenom, though, was watching the game continually roll in favor of the same player. Though the overall play was stellar, the deck was with Durrrr. The contest looked more like a highlight reel of Durrrr’s face responding to a catch when he needed it than an actual poker tournament.

But stay tuned because, as they say, "The sun don’t shine on the same hindquarters indefinitely." When you’re young, good and red-hot it does stay sunny awhile. But, though Durrrr has got all three of those characteristics right now, nobody’s young forever. The Mr. Spock knockoff is living a charmed life, but the Klingons are gonna have another thing or two to say about this before it’s through. That’s my prediction.
