As No. 4 on AceHoyle.com’s top rated poker sites list, RedKings isn’t in its spot beside the big dogs for nothing. It’s been steadily pushing its way to the fore since it launched in 2007, and we’re betting it will overtake Party Poker within another year or so. An OnGame Network member, it features one helluva sound software package and, as a result, already draws some 6,900 ring-game players and 30,000 tournament players during peak hours. Naturally, Team Hoyle is hard on every room we review, but is it really possible to argue with such a strong fan base? Actually, it is. After all, we don’t call our reviews “fair and honest” for nothing….
One of the main reasons for so much player traffic is RedKings’ poker selection. It not only offers Texas Hold ‘em, Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, Seven-Card Stud, Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo and Five-Card Draw in no-, pot- and fixed-limit variants, but features table limits ranging from $0.10-0.20 to $1,000-2,000. Better still, its software allows players to choose between long- and short-hand settings, as well as between regular elimination play and a heads-up option. All these settings can be mixed and matched so that, with a smorgasbord of possibilities at their fingertips, it’s nearly impossible for players to try all of RedKings’ poker variants and still have time to sleep.
RedKings’ Poker Selection
A strong player base and complete library of poker variants don’t seem to have undermined how generous RedKings’ online promotions are. And yet the site’s promise of a whopping $2,500 sign-up bonus is a little misleading. For one thing, as RedKings’ online promotions page explicitly states, players must earn a fixed number of points before seeing a cent of their free money. And these points come in on a 1-1 ratio so that you only get one point for every $1 in raked hands you generate. Of course, a point system in itself isn’t that noteworthy a drawback as many top rated poker sites, including Titan Poker, have them. What makes Red Kings’ system particularly unpleasant, however, is that players only have one month to collect the required number of points before their bonus expires. This stipulation may very well be the lowest tactic we’ve ever seen from an online poker room because Red Kings’ average maximum bet hovers around a mere $3 per hand. Clearly, few players would have the time to play poker non-stop for a month, meaning few of them ever see the full $2,500. And this fact, in turn, only goes to show how important it is to read ALL the fine print on an online poker room’s homepage before making a deposit.
RedKings Online Promotions and Bonuses
Other noteworthy RedKings online promotions include its $50 refer-a-friend program. Though not nearly as impossible to collect on as the room’s sign-up bonus, the refer-a-friend promotion is also a little misleading in that for each person a player refers he has to accrue 400 additional points in order to collect his $50. Obviously, this kind of tight-fisted behavior doesn’t stack up very well against competitors like Pacific Poker, and we can’t help busting Red Kings down a few ranks as a result.
If it weren’t for all the stipulations surrounding RedKings’ online promotions, we here at AceHoyle.com would have probably awarded it the No. 2 – or, even, No. 1 – slot in our list of top rated poker sites. Still, there’s something to be said for a room that’s willing to match up to $2,500, and despite all the hoops players have to jump through to get their bonuses, RedKings’ poker selection and overall play experience are probably the best in the industry. All things considered, then, we’re totally comfortable including it in our Top 5, just not any higher than No. 4.
