AceHoyle.com is the official website of the Ace Hoyle comics series. A combination of earlier online publishing models, AceHoyle.com mixes the advertising structures of traditional online gambling portals with professionally produced articles, news and comics to create one of the Web’s first profitable consumer publications based solely on the Internet.
Ace Hoyle is a comic-book character loosely based on all the slick professional poker players we’ve met over the years. He and other characters in the series are completely fictional and are not meant to resemble any specific living person. Any likeness to a living person is strictly coincidental and unintentional.
Ace Hoyle is the creation of executive editor Phill Provance and senior designer Tomas Batha. The story goes that, one day, Phill and AceHoyle.com’s president, Mike Bosch, were kicking around ideas, and Mike mentioned an artist named Tomas he’d like to work with. Phill, who had recently begun working with Mike after interning for Wizard Entertainment, suggested they do a comic series. Mike thought it was a wonderful idea and put Phill and Tomas in contact with each other. The rest, as they say, is history….
To find out more about Ace Hoyle’s creators check out their bios.
Hmmm… that’s a tough one. When asked, Phill Provance said, “Only if the fans are cute and female, or rich and female.” Actually, though, the answer – for the sake of keeping our folks safe – is no. And for this reason we’ve omitted Phill’s and Tomas’s contact information from their bios. We do, however, encourage fans to contact them via our Contact Us page and to shake their hands at comic conventions.
For more info on where the Ace Hoyle crew will be, when, check out our complete schedule at Dolly's Daily Planner.
Here at AceHoyle.com, we always love to hear from our fans and critics. If there’s something you like, hate or think needs tweaking, please feel free to post a comment on our message boards, or contact us directly via our Contact Us page.
If you love prizes and special offers as much as we do, you’ll love the slew of premiums we’ve packed into our site. But before you can get your hands on any of our schwag, you have to sign up for membership in our official Hoyle-ites fan club. Signing up is fun, fast, free and easy. The only stipulation is you must be 18 years of age or older.
No, no and no again. Believe it or not, all our services and content here at AceHoyle.com are absolutely free. We do, however, ask that you give our advertisers’ products and our merchandise a chance as this revenue allows us to keep it free. Otherwise, we may have to go to a subscription-based model – and nobody wants that….
The short answer – though it’s obviously more complex when you get down to it – is that our advertisers and our merchandise do. As long as our readers sign up for our advertisers’ services, we get to keep the power and water running and create more comics and articles. Also, in order to keep our reporting and feature content relatively free from advertiser bias, we have put together Dick’s Dastardly Den as a secondary source of revenue. This online store, which will debut November 2009, will feature tons of Ace Hoyle ™ brand merchandise, including licensed poker hats, cards, chips, thermoses, bound editions, t-shirts and whatever else we feel like selling.
If you like what we’re doing and want to tie your name with ours, a great option is buying ad space on AceHoyle.com. To do so please send an inquiry to our marketing department via our Contact Us page.
Coming this November, AceHoyle.com will launch its official online store, Dick’s Dastardly Den. There you’ll find tons of Ace Hoyle ™ brand merchandise, including licensed poker hats, cards, chips, thermoses, bound editions, t-shirts and maybe even removable tattoos (We’re still trying to sell Mike on that last one).
Maybe: If you have not removed the product from its packaging and return it in one piece with the original receipt within six weeks of its delivery, we will issue you a prompt refund. Any merchandise that has been damaged, opened, returned without a receipt or returned after six weeks of its delivery will not be refunded.
Many of the advertisers featured on AceHoyle.com are online casinos and poker rooms. If you choose to play at one of these sites, the first thing you’ll have to do is click on the link on the advertiser’s ad. We’ve conveniently linked all our ads, including those on our online casino and poker room review pages, to our advertisers to make this process as smooth and painless as possible. Once you’ve been redirected to an online casino or poker room’s site, you’ll next want to download its software. After that, it’s merely a matter of signing up for membership and following the operator’s deposit directions
This is another question that we can only answer with a “maybe.” Really, it depends on where you live. For instance, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 bans those living in the U.S. and U.S. territories from making deposits at online casinos and poker rooms. In Europe, on the other hand, most EU member states, as well as the U.K., allow their citizens to game to their hearts’ content. Many online casinos and poker rooms block access to players living in countries that forbid Internet gambling. But some, especially the less above-board variety, don’t bother to follow the law. Here at AceHoyle.com we vet every one of our advertisers to make sure they don’t allow minors or people living where online gambling is illegal to access their sites. We do, however, suggest researching your local laws for yourself before deciding to make a deposit.
Most times the answer to this question is: No. This is especially true if you’re downloading software from a reputable online casino or poker room with a presence on an international stock exchange. Some operators, however, exist outside the law and could just as soon be a scam as a proxy site looking to give your computer a virus. The best way to tell the difference between legal and illegal sites is to check for seals at the bottom of their homepages. These seals indicate that third-party inspectors have vetted and certified that a site is operating within the law. Obviously, you’ll want to investigate the inspectors too to make sure they’re above-board. But this is a process you can easily perform on your own by searching for the inspecting agency’s name on Google.
If you’re still concerned about messing up your machine after seeing these seals, you can also play at a casino or poker room that offers a Web-based software package. This kind of software is download-free and opens right in your Web browser (e.g. Explorer, Firefox, etc.). The tradeoff, however, is that Web-based programs tend to be a little less snazzy than their downloadable counterparts; their graphics are usually less attractive, and their load times can seem to take forever. Ultimately it’s up to you which kind of software you choose. But, if we here at AceHoyle.com had to pick, we’d go with the downloadable option every time.
At the end of the day, which online casino or poker room you choose to play at is a matter of personal taste. Many have software suites produced by the same programmers and are networked with other operators, so their interface and games tend to be similar if not the same. And yet there are differences like themes, promotions and membership demographics that can make you love one operator and hate another. For this reason we suggest that if you’re thinking about signing up for an online casino or poker room you check out all your options first. Many operators offer a play-money setting so you can test their games, and this is usually the best way to find out whether you feel at home at a particular site.
In our opinion… It’s best if you answer this question for yourself. Obviously people of some religious faiths say it is, and some sociologists and psychologists agree. All we know is that the ad structure for online gambling is one of the few models that works well for Internet publications. And since we want to bring you our content and not starve in the process it’s kind of necessary we use it. That said, we certainly do not advocate underage or problem gambling, and we do not require our readers to visit our advertisers’ sites (albeit we only get paid if they do).
Hey, seriously, it’s cool. We’re not pushing you into it. Just look at it as something that’s there if you want it. Again, we only get paid if you do. So if you like what we’re doing, it would be really awesome if you’d at least try it out.
Online gambling and poker are safe as long as you play at reputable sites. As we mentioned above, the best way to find out if an operator is above-board is to check for third-party inspection certificates on its homepage. If it has these you can pretty much rest assured that the operator won’t cheat you or run off with your deposit.
This one’s entirely up to you and depends, to some extent, on which online poker room or casino you choose to play at. One thing we can tell you, though, is that you should never – NEVER – wager more than you can afford to lose. Keep that piece of advice in your back pocket and you should be fine.
In most cases, yes, you can learn more about an online casino or poker room before you make a deposit because most operators allow you to try their games with play money. You can also check out sites like ours, which feature full reviews of several operators. This information can be invaluable to prospective players as it allows them find out about an operator’s bonuses, games, themes, player demographics, etc., before ever visiting its site.
When you deposit money into an online gambling account you will likely use an online money-transfer or wire service. Likewise, when you’re ready to cash out the online casino or poker room you’re playing at will likely send you your winnings using the same method. Some operators do credit bank accounts directly or send checks, but these are few and far-between. The only way to find out which deposit and withdrawal methods an operator uses is to check out its site.
One of the best places to find out about casino and poker games is here at AceHoyle.com. Our Greenhorn Casino Games Guide and Miss Dolly’s Poker School both offer rules and strategy tips for a complete list of games. Better still, like all the other content on our site these two sections are absolutely free to our readers.
Overall every game you’d find at a traditional brick-and-mortar casino is offered somewhere online. The only way to find out which games a particular online casino or poker room offers, though, is to check out its software package for yourself.
Again, the only way to make sure an online casino or poker room doesn’t cheat you is to play at reputable sites with third-party certifications. If you don’t do that, you’re pretty much asking for trouble.
Yes, many online casinos do offer live support. Really, though, it’s a matter of what kind you prefer and what language you speak. Needless to say, operators will allow you to play at their sites no matter what your native tongue. But they won’t always have a support team ready to help you if you have problems. Also, some online poker rooms and casinos offer instant-messenger services, while others offer telephone support and others still offer both or none. Here at AceHoyle.com we note what kinds of systems the casinos and poker rooms we reviews have in place. But we certainly haven’t reviewed every operator out there, so again, the rule of thumb is: When in doubt, check it out.
Online casinos and poker rooms are meant to provide entertainment, but there’s always a risk of players making bets that harm themselves and those close to them. If you think that you are or someone you know is developing a problem, it's always best to attack the addiction before it becomes too serious! To help you do so, we here at AceHoyle.com have put together a gambling addiction section with more information on compulsive gambling and links to sources that can help those afflicted with it overcome their problem.
