GAMBLING ADDICTION

We know how awesome it is seeing Ace clean up at casinos and card tables. But unlike you, Ace is a fictional character; unlike you, he doesn’t have college classes to go to, doesn’t have to earn a living or run a business, and doesn’t have to feed himself. Needless to say, here at AceHoyle.com we love a good wager as much as the next guy. But we also realize that – and, in fact, have noted many times in our Greenhorn Casino Games Guide – a majority of casino games simply aren’t winnable. For this reason, we only advocate gambling as a pastime activity. And we strongly feel that if you start “chasing wins” or gambling excessively, you need to step away from all casino games and seek professional help.

Gambling addiction goes by many names – including “compulsive gambling,” “problem gambling” and “pathological gambling” – but, no matter what you call it, it is just as ugly and hurtful as alcoholism and drug addiction: The amount of money you give to a casino is best when it is small. If you find yourself living out those horror stories of gambling addiction – wagering away your home, your child’s college tuition or the money you need to make your bills – you aren’t just hurting yourself, you’re hurting those you love. Online gambling, meanwhile, can exacerbate the problem: Before the Internet invaded every home with a phone line, gambling addicts had to go somewhere to make a bet. Now, they can simply dial-up, log on and gamble away their lives any time day or night. This makes it so much harder for friends and loved ones to help an addict. And, while we here at AceHoyle.com do use part of the revenue earned from peoples’ bets as a means to an end, our hearts sincerely go out to families stricken with this disease.

In order to make good on our sympathy, then, we have compiled the following information to help those afflicted overcome their problem. We also pray that none of our activities are directly responsible for harming our readers.

      Gambling Addiction: A Definition

Gambling addiction, put simply, is the unavoidable urge to place bets despite the consequences. Those afflicted with gambling addiction will, therefore, gamble with money they can’t afford to lose and, when they do lose it, will still do anything in their power to make another bet.

That said, there is a slight difference between someone with a “gambling problem” and someone diagnosed as a “pathological gambler.” Whereas problem gamblers only gamble away all their free money, pathological gamblers (who have a disorder known as DSM-IV) will bet things they themselves don’t even own. Also, problem gamblers do not experience clinically defined compulsions to gamble, while pathological gamblers do. Part of a pathological gambler’s problem is that, psychologically speaking, he can’t differentiate between winning and losing; he gets that great, tingly feeling all over no matter what - meaning that, in science speak, his brain is “high” on serotonin.

And yet if you’re truly a pathological gambler our explaining all this won’t help. You’ll simply convince yourself that you’re a “problem gambler” and continue destroying yourself. In reality, only a licensed medical professional can make this determination. So, no matter which of these you may think you are, if you find yourself gambling excessively you must seek help – not only for your own sake, but for your family’s.

      Pathological Gambling Symptoms

The following list of DSM-IV symptoms can help you determine if you or someone you know is truly a pathological gambler. Again, however, only a licensed medical professional can make a diagnosis:

  • The suspected pathological gambler progressively places more bets for progressively more money.
  • The suspected pathological gambler spends an inordinate amount of time gambling, to the detriment of his career and relationships.
  • The suspected pathological gambler is preoccupied with gambling and finding money to place bets with.
  • The suspected pathological gambler reports a heightened sense of pleasure when gambling.
  • The suspected pathological gambler continues to gamble despite ruinous losses – such as the loss of his business or home – as a direct result of gambling.
  • The suspected pathological gambler borrows money in order to continue gambling, takes out loans secretly or maxes out his credit card.
  • The suspected pathological gambler brags about his wins, but refuses to talk about his losses.
  • The suspected pathological gambler reports or exhibits mood swings: He feels great when he’s won and terrible when he’s lost.
  • The suspected pathological gambler wagers more money and does so for longer than he initially planned.
  • The suspected pathological gambler exhibits secretive behavior: He hides betting receipts and slips and has mail related to his gambling activities sent to a work address or anonymous P.O. Box.

Again, gambling can be an enjoyable pastime if you do it in moderation. If, however, you find yourself or someone you know exhibiting any of the symptoms above, we highly suggest seeking the opinion of a licensed psychiatrist or contacting one of the many support groups listed below.

      What Causes Gambling Addiction?

As with any addiction, pathological gambling begins subtly: Most people gamble occasionally, playing the lottery, participating in bingo night at their place of worship or making a spare bet on a major sporting event. Some, however, are hardwired to continue placing bets after the church lights are off, or the game or drawing is over. The fact that gambling is so prevalent in many cultures makes these early symptoms difficult to spot. And the secretive nature of problem gamblers makes them doubly so.

Needless to say, what begins as a night of fun will soon turn into a nightmare few can afford. The pathological gambler may pass through a phase similar to “problem gambling” in which he maintains a certain level of control. But inevitably he will be powerless before his addiction.

How Can I Stop Myself or Someone I Know From Gambling Compulsively?

Even a century ago gambling addiction was neither recognized as a disease, nor were there support systems to help those afflicted with it. Today, in contrast, medical science recognizes that some people simply can’t help themselves, and hundreds of associations exist to aid them. Of these, Gamblers Anonymous  – like its sister organization Alcoholics Anonymous – is one of the best and most widely recognized support groups.

And yet, as it bases its approach primarily on Christian teachings, Gamblers Anonymous may not be for everyone. For this reason, other organizations, many supported by donations from both offline and online casinos, offer more secular-based treatment. In the U.K., for instance, GamCare  provides aid to addictive gamblers including a hotline, forum and even a treatment center. We have taken the liberty of listing several such organizations below.
