BACCARAT STRATEGY

Baccarat strategy has a history of its own, one that evolved alongside this long-established and classic casino game. Throughout the years, players have made endless attempts to come up with the perfect baccarat strategy. Some have tried applying card counting strategies similar to those found in blackjack. Other baccarat strategies and systems highly resemble those found in roulette and other ‘even money’ bets. But before you can pick out a baccarat strategy that fits your personal gambling style, you must have a complete understanding of baccarat odds.

Card Counting Baccarat Strategies

Unlike blackjack strategy, applying card-counting techniques to baccarat is impossible. In Baccarat, bets are placed before the hands are dealt, meaning that the remaining cards in the deck could go to either the Player or the Banker hands. In the Punto Banco version of the game, the player has no control over the deck, since the decision to ‘hit’ or ‘stand’ is completely automatic. Furthermore, many casinos draw cards from an 8-deck shoe to discourage the use of this baccarat strategy, thus ruling out the possibility of card counting as a valid baccarat strategy.

Baccarat Systems

Many sites promote fool-proof baccarat strategies and betting systems, but you'd be a fool to believe that such baccarat strategies truly exist. These so-called baccarat systems are heavily based on the infamous ‘gamblers fallacy’, and therefore all share the same logical flaw. But before we explain why these baccarat systems DON’T work, we will first describe some of the more popular baccarat systems out there:

Pattern Spotting – The Most Popular Baccarat System

Casinos encourage baccarat players to keep track of the outcome of every hand. They do so by supplying scorecards and pencils for the players around the table. Players try to spot a pattern in the results, so they can apply one of two baccarat systems:

Baccarat System #1 – Trend Riding. Players will try to take advantage of a recurring pattern by the trend, believing it will continue.
Baccarat System #2 – Betting against the pattern. The mirror image of ‘trend riding’, players will bet against the trend, believing the results must start to even out in the opposite direction.

Pattern spotting has become so popular among baccarat players that many of them do it religiously, believing it to be a legitimate baccarat system. In fact, you’ll rarely find a baccarat table without players keeping score in an attempt to find a pattern. The sad truth is that pattern spotting is a complete waste of time, papers and pencils!

The Martingale Baccarat System

Though widely identified with the roulette wheel, the Martingale is a betting system that has been applied to many even money bets at the casino. The technique is simple: the player doubles up his bet after every loss. That way, the first win recovers all previous losses, and yields a profit that is equal to the initial bet.

Why Baccarat Systems Fail

Applying simple probability theory to the game of baccarat, mathematicians have reached the inevitable conclusion that each round of the game is an ‘independent event’. Simply put in “normal” language – the outcome of each round is neither affected by any previous rounds, nor has it any effect on the upcoming rounds.

Many baccarat systems would have you believe otherwise, but since the game ‘has no memory’, past results can not be used to determine the next result. Just like most roulette systems, baccarat strategies can be enjoyable and help enhance the betting experience, but they have no mathematical basis. No matter the system, the casino will always have an edge. A smart player will put the scorecards and systems aside and instead follow our logical baccarat tips.

Baccarat Tips

Many players think they can avoid the inherent house edge by betting on the Banker’s hand to win. Don’t let the names of the bets confuse you – this notion is simply not true. Whether you bet on the Banker or the Player, the casino will always have an edge. But – the house edge becomes considerably lower if you bet on the Banker. As demonstrated above, the baccarat odds for winning a Banker bet are 0.458597, while the payout is 19 to 20. This brings the house edge to 1.06%, which is very low compared to most bets found in a casino. Mathematically speaking, a smart strategy would be to always bet on the Banker. If, like most people, you’re in the game for enjoyment, go right ahead and use your scorecards to ride those trends!
