WHERE TO PLAY

KENO

KENO GLOSSARY

Those who play keno and keno slot machines aren’t a very talkative set. Usually they sit silently in casinos’ keno lounges, ensconced behind tickets, snacks, cigars and emptied cocktail cups. Occasionally, however, they’ll step outside their barricades, and when they do, what comes out of their mouths could confuse a cockney. Why keno slang is so unintelligible is anybody’s guess. After all, learning how to play keno and keno slot machines is hardly rocket science. And yet the fact remains that keno and keno slot machines have a language all their own, and – like anything else – you can’t expect to learn how to play keno without first learning how to talk keno.

That’s why here at AceHoyle.com we’ve created the following keno glossary. It’s perfect for printing out and carrying in your back pocket or taping to your computer monitor when you’re first leaning how to play keno. Better still, it’s far more complete than any other keno glossary floating around in the veritable sea of onlie gambling sites; it’s just the thing to have you walking around your favorite keno lounge and keno slot machines speaking keno-ese in no time. But don’t take our word for it. Check out AceHoyle.com’s keno glossary for yourself.

AceHoyle.com’s Keno Glossary

Ball – In keno a small sphere marked with and representing one of the numbers in the game’s number pool. Keno balls were originally made of white plastic and resembled Ping-Pong balls. During a game of keno, a casino employee would draw several balls from the “cage” (See: Cage). The employee would then call out the selected numbers. Today, casinos rarely select their keno numbers using balls and cages, having replaced this older system with random number generators.

Bet - 1.) Money risked on one or several of an event’s possible outcomes with the expectation that if the selected outcomes occur the person risking the money will profit; and if the selected outcomes do not occur that that person will suffer a loss. When playing keno and keno slot machines, a player does this by selecting numbers from a pool of those that a casino or computer program will choose from in a random drawing. 2.) The act of taking such a risk.

Board In keno, a display showing the numbers selected in a drawing. As an almost universal convention, modern casinos use television screens as boards.

Call The moment when a keno operator announces a game’s chosen numbers. Whereas Internet casino gambling online keno systems display their selections on electronic “boards” (See: Board), some traditional casinos still have employees verbally “call out” the numbers.

Catch To have bet on a number in a keno drawing that the casino has also selected; Ex: “Sam won big playing keno Saturday; he caught all twelve of his number.”

Cage Several metal bars bent to form an egg-shaped or spherical container in which keno operators shuffle the game’s numbered balls. Online gambling sites and many modernized casinos have replaced the traditional cage-and-ball method with random number generator systems.

Draw - The selection of numbers in a keno game; some brick-and-mortar casinos still do so by having an employee pull numbered balls from a mixing cage. Many modern casinos and all online gambling sites, in contrast, use random number generators to select the outcomes of their keno games.

Hit - A keno number that both a player and the casino have selected; Ex: “Michael played 1 through 15 in the last keno drawing, and 5, 8, 10 and 13 were all hits.”

House An entity operating casino games. In keno this term appears most often when discussing the game’s odds (See: House Edge).

House Edge The percentage of each bet lost to a casino over time.

Jackpot An especially large amount of money a casino awards to the winner of one of its games. To win a keno jackpot players often have to bet the maximum number squares allowed.

Draw Sheet A paper slip listing all of the numbers a keno game operator has already drawn. Originally, casinos published “draw sheets” to check their drawing employees’ accuracy; later, they began circulating such documents among players to entice them into playing “due” numbers (See: Due).

Due Describes a number a casino has not drawn during a given keno session. Many keno players wrongly believe that if an operator has not selected a number he is more likely to do so in the future; this belief is untrue because each keno drawing is an independent event unaffected by previous drawings. (See: Gambler’s Fallacy).

Gambler’s Fallacy Formal Logic: The mistaken belief that two independent and unrelated events affect each others’ outcomes; the idea that a given number is “due” because a keno operator hasn’t drawn it is an example of this. The probability that an Internet casino gambling online keno system will select a given number does increase once it has already selected several numbers in the same drawing. But each new drawing resets these probabilities because the Internet casino gambling online keno system is again selecting from a full pool of numbers. For this reason, casinos only allow keno players to bet between drawings, not during them.

Keno Lounge An area within a casino reserved for keno players.

Live Keno A keno game in which a casino employee selects numbers using a ball-and-cage system. Many online and brick-and-mortar casinos have stopped using this method in favor of random number generators.

Net Win A casino-game player’s true profit after accounting for losses and overhead, such as the cost of keno tickets. (You can think of this keno glossary entry as the amount of money you take home that wasn’t yours to begin with).

Odds The likelihood that one of an event’s possible outcomes will occur, expressed fractionally as the number of selected outcomes over the number of unselected outcomes. Note: Unlike many casino games, there is no way for a player to alter his odds of winning at keno.

Progressive A jackpot comprising a percentage of each bet made on a given game to date; most keno jackpots are of this kind.

Random Number Generator A computerized system that indiscriminately selects outcome(s) in a game of chance.

Runner In keno, a casino employee who collects keno tickets from players outside the keno lounge.

Writer In keno, a casino employee who issues tickets, manages the game’s personnel and actively attempts to curtail player fraud.
