WHERE TO PLAY

TEXAS HOLD’EM

TEXAS HOLD’EM ODDS

This may come as a surprise to the beginners among us, but Texas Hold ‘em odds are the key to successful poker play. Many poker celebs like to give out the impression that they rely on their gut feeling, letting their natural poker instincts guide them whenever they play Hold ‘em poker, but the truth is quite the opposite. Each and every Texas Hold ‘em move they make is heavily calculated, and when we say calculated we mean they use math and arithmetic to make sure they’re doing the right thing.

Texas Hold ‘em Odds - What Are they?

Texas Holdem odds are your way of knowing if you’re being offered a good bet at any given betting round. Whenever you engage in any kind of betting, the most important question to ask is “are the odds in my favor”. For example, if your friend were to offer you the classic “heads-or-tails” bet, you know our odds of winning each round are 50%, or 1:1. Then you would look at the payouts for this bet to determine if it’s a good bet for you. Continuing our example, if your friend is offering a 3:1 payout, you should take the bet, because you’re risking $1 for a 50% chance of making $3. In this scenario, a 1:1 payout is known as an ‘even bet’. Anything under 1:1 would be a bad bet to accept on your part, since the odds are working against you.

Sounds simple? The truth is that calculating your Texas Holdem odds is a little more complicated than ‘heads-or-tails’, but with some practice Texas Hold ‘em odds can become a second nature. When you play Hold ‘em poker, or any other poker variant for that matter, you’re constantly guessing, since you never know where you stand in relation to your opponents. What really separates good players from the rest of the pack is that good players take calculated guesses, while beginners just blindly throw money into the pot. Good players are able to achieve this by constantly asking themselves “what are my Texas Holdem odds”.

Calculating your Texas Hold ‘em Odds

There are two stages to calculating your Texas Holdem odds. First, you have to find out what your pot odds are. Then you must calculate your hand odds. Comparing the two is the secret to Texas Holdem odds.

Texas Hold ‘em Pot Odds

Much like the payouts in casinos and bookmakers, pot odds are a ratio representing the amount you stand to win relative to your bet. For example, if there are $20 in the pot, and calling the current bet will cost you $2, then your pot odds are 20:2, or 10:1. In simple words: you would be paying $2 for a chance to win $20.

Texas Hold ‘em Hand Odds

This is the second step to calculating your Texas Holdem odds. When you play Hold ‘em poker, it’s not enough to know your pot odds. Rather, you must constantly calculate your hand odds. Hand odds represent your chance of making any given poker hand. The basic formula for calculating your hand odds is: number of outs, divided by the number of cards left in the deck.

‘Outs’ are the cards remaining in the deck that can complete the hand you’re drawing to. For example, say you’re holding two clubs and drawing to a flush. After the turn, two clubs are showing on the board. The total number of clubs in the pack is 13, 4 of which are already out (2 in your hand, 2 on the table). So you have 9 outs to hit your hand.

The remaining cards must now be calculated. When you play Hold ‘em poker, you never know which hole cards your opponents are holding, so as far as you’re concerned, there’s no difference between cards that are actually still available from the deck, and cards that were dealt to your opponents. Continuing with our example, there are 52 cards in the deck minus 6 – the 2 you were dealt, and the 4 flop cards. The remaining number of cards is therefore 46, making your hand odds, or your chances of making your flush on the river 46:9, or in percentage representation: 9/46 = 0.19% (approximately).
The truth is that there is a simpler way to calculate your Holdem hand odds, but before you skip to our Texas Hold ‘em Odds Calculator, you should be familiar with the long way we've just described.

When you play Hold ‘em poker, you should always change the percentage representation into the more instinctive ‘odds’ representation. For this you should use the following formula:

Odds = ( (1 / percent) -1 ) to 1
Using our previous flush draw example, the hand odds will be:
Odds = (1 / 0.19) – 1 = 4.1 : 1 (approximately) to hit a flush on the river.

The Golden Rule of Texas Hold ‘em Odds

Now that you’ve calculated both your hand odds and your pot odds, you should always apply the golden rule of poker odds: If your pot odds are greater than your hand odds, you should make the bet, since over time you are expected to see a profit. Using our example, if the pot odds are anywhere above 4.1:1, you should go for it – unless you think someone might be holding a better hand than your flush.
